SOL TUESDAY: Study buddies

As I stare at these cards and hope my brain will find the answers written on the back, I have my fluffs encouraging me as I go.

I often need quiet music in the background to help me focus, and repetition is key.

I know my classmates all study in their own way. Some people need friends around to keep them motivated, while others create their own quizzes online.

Coffee shops or libraries are sometimes needed to get in the zone while I am fine at home tuning out the world around me.

I often wish I was someone who could read through the study guide once and do well on the test.

I definitely strive to be someone who can remember the information months after my courses.

Retention has always been tough for me. I know in this veterinary field that the courses build on each other – you are expected to recall terms or the normal heart rate of a large dog at any time.

All I can do is try my best and review constantly (especially the prerequisite courses that I have already gotten As in).

It definitely helps to have my fluffs to keep me relaxed.

  1. Matching the end retention goal with a process helps. When 2 hours of my MA comps was regurgitation of definitions and laws, I tackled then phrase by phrase as I drove the 2 hours home each weekend. Slow and steady filled my brain to the rim.

  2. We just had PD about retention recently – and I kept thinking throughout the whole thing about how I’ve always been such a terrible studier … I guess when I was younger I figured out ways to do it — but it never came easy!

The key, from the PD, seems to be when you review for retention – and how you interweave that practice.

I think a fluffy study buddy is the real key though!
