While watching the Oscars last night, I noticed how many firsts there were! First time winners, first time nominees, first female conductor of the scores, first female composer to win in 20 years, and first film from South Korea to sweep the categories and win best film.
I think it’s great that the Oscars have started changing to be more inclusive – it is a shock that it took 92 years, but when you think about it, times were different for many of the ceremonies. Equality and availability for success was much more difficult. Awareness in the winning speeches made me feel like there is hope. They were talking about change and the impact of certain movies or characters. Sure it isn’t a perfect system, but it is growing and changing for the better.
