I was lesson planing over the weekend and noticed that the word problem talked about texting.

Something about this seemed funny to me. I had never thought the curriculum books would update themselves to match technology and what students use.
It is good that they are updating because often problems don’t make sense to children – if they don’t relate or connect to what the problem is talking about, it can alienate them.
This word problem will probably also start conversations and get them thinking about how many texts they send in a month – without knowing it, they are using math in their daily lives!
